Introducing Our Children

Student Tuition Campaign Goals

A couple notes of clarification – High School in Uganda is 6 years long, unlike the four year path to graduation in American high schools. And many of the kids who found their way to us were older than one might expect when at last they were able to begin, or return to, their education. Hence, you may note that some of our young people are now 20 years old or older as they prepare to finish high school and then take next steps into higher education. Lastly, by contributing  to tuition costs donors are also assuring good nutrition and medical care for our students, as these services are included in tuitions fees.

Our Girls

Tuitions due by end of April, $5,300

Shifa

Shifa is 24 and is completing her second year as a student at YMCA University. Shifa’s father died when she was a toddler. Her mother took care of her and her two siblings as best she could. She managed to pay for Shifa’s education up to four years in secondary school. When she could no longer manage the fees involved, Shifa’s mother came to us to seek education sponsorship. We started paying her tuition, from her fifth year in secondary school onward, all the way through to high school graduation. Shifa is currently pursuing a three year degree program in Catering and Hotel Management, which she is on course to complete in 2027.

Shifa’s upcoming June tuition due will be $2,000.

Abi

Abi is 24 years old. She is a student at YMCA University.  Abi’s father died when she was about 7 years old. Her mother sent her to live with her paternal uncle when she remarried, but the uncle’s wife wanted nothing to do with her. When she was about 12 years old Abi went to live with her elderly great uncle and his wife, the only other relatives she still knew. The GVCP stepped in to take care of her and pay her school tuition fees. Abi had only been to school sporadically up until then, but her enthusiasm about pursing her education was truly impressive.  Due to her tenacity, she was able to finish primary and secondary school with flying colors! Abi is currently pursuing a double degree in Catering, Hotel Management, and Food Science, which she will finish in 2028. You can view an earlier photo of Abi, on this page, engaged in her daily chores, as she emerged from the hut house where our children live while they help with planting, weeding, and harvesting our crops.

Abi’s upcoming June tuition due will be $2,000.

Beat

Beat is 19 yrs old.  She will complete Secondary school in the winter of 2027. Beat’s father died when she was about 11 years old. Having heard of our work, and unable to pay school fees for Beat, her mother came to us, truly desperate and hoping that we could help. GVCP started paying Beat’s tuition and buying her scholastic supplies. Beat persevered and proved herself to be dedicated to mastering her studies. Following high school graduation, Beat will be joining university life and intends to train to become an Obstetrician.

Beat’s current tuition due is $1,000.

Becky

Becky is 23 years old. She is a second year university student. Becky’s father died when she was about 5 years old. When she was about 8 years old, her mother just walked away, literally leaving her daughter to fend for herself!  Becky started living in her neighborhood church. Not surprisingly, she had a mental breakdown at about age 13. When we at the GVCP heard about her situation, we arranged for her to be admitted to a mental health hospital where she received truly supportive treatment. When she was discharged three months later, we brought her home to live with Anne and enrolled her in school. She is thriving now! Becky is in her first year of a three year degree program in Clothing Design, due to be completed in 2027.

Becky’s upcoming June tuition due will be $2,000.

Kevinah

Kevinah, who prefers to go by her nickname “Kevin”, is 19 years old. She will complete secondary school in the winter of 2027. Kevin’s father died when she was about 6 years old. Her mother remarried and left her in the care of her paternal step-aunt. As she was an avid and determined student, a small neighborhood organization offered to pay her tuition fees so she could continue in school. Reluctantly, when she finished her primary school “Completion Exams”, the organization that had been helping her informed her that this was as far as they could take her. She was devastated, especially when the results came back and she had passed with As. Right about that time, we at the GVCP heard of her story and started looking for her. She was overjoyed when we located her and offered to take her on as a member of our GVCP family. With her intelligence, focus, grit, determination and humility, she will no doubt master whatever profession she desires to pursue! Kevin is now in her 5th year of high school and she plans to become a Biochemist.

Kevin’s current tuition due is $1,000.

Annah

Annah is 19 years old and will be completing secondary school in the winter of 2026. Annah’s mother died when she was three years old. Her grandparents took on the responsibility of raising her. They managed to pay her school tuition throughout primary school but could not afford secondary school. The GVCP heard about Annah’s situation and offered to help her continue her education. For the first time in her young life she has now been able to go to school without interruptions. Upon graduating from high school, Annah  plans to attend a university in 2027.  Annah looks forward to a career in Psychology. ( Link here if you would like to read a few words from a letter that Annah wrote to thank our donors and  to share how her engagement with the GVCP has transformed her life.)

Annah’s current tuition due is $1,000.

Sophie

Sophie is 19. She recently graduated from high school and will be going on to college in August of this year. Sophia’s mother left her with her father when she was a toddler. Her father remarried a woman who was unimaginably cruel to her. Nonetheless, Sophie persevered.  She would sell food on the streets of Jinja to drunken revelers until morning. This is how she struggled to get money for school tuition. When she was about 14 years old, her stepmother told Sophie that she couldn’t keep her any longer, since she had her own children. So Sophia asked her elderly neighbors if she could stay with them for a while. They welcomed her into their home to live with them and – as is the norm in Uganda – she started referring to them as grandma and grandpa. Though they cared for her, these two kind adoptive grandparents couldn’t offer anything else beyond shelter and some food. This is when Anne heard about Sophie and went to interview her. Her story was so remarkable that we started funding her tuition and the purchasing of her personal needs. She’s has now recently graduated from secondary school. She will be joining university life this summer.  Sophie is exploring the possibility of training in how to promote tourism in Uganda.

Sophia’s upcoming June tuition due will be $2,000.

Ella

Ella is 14 years old. She will complete high school in the winter of 2029. Ella’s dad died prior to her birth. After she was born, her mother developed serious mental illness. When Ella was one and a half years old, her mother abandoned her in the care of her elderly grandparents. When she was two and a half years old, Global Village Children’s Project heard of her complicated needs and soon she started living with our director, Anne Muyanga. Ella has grown into being a very bright, responsible and beautiful young teen who is looking forward to becoming a university student in 2030. She is on the school basketball team, and enjoys gardening, among other activities. You can get a glimpse of a much younger Ella on our website, if you scroll down to photo of her and her brother Eli each carrying a load of bananas they have just harvested on this page. Despite the long path that will lie ahead for her, Ella plans on training to become a neurosurgeon.

Ella’s current tuition due is $1,300.

Blessing

Blessing is 16 years old. She joined our program in 2024 – the most recent addition to our GVCP family – and is currently enrolled in her second year of high school.  She is not pictured in the group photo above. But you can meet her, photographed the day she first applied to our program, by linking to this page and then scrolling down to the section titled The Road Ahead “ toward the bottom of the page. Blessing’s father died when she was a toddler. Shortly after her father’s death Blessing developed an infection in her right leg which led to her being hospitalized for six months. Her mother, struggling to stay afloat financially, came to us asking for help. Unfortunately, we couldn’t aid Blessing very much initially – at first only assisting a bit with food and transport to doctor’s appointments and doing our best to help her stay in school.  “Blessing” was herself blessed when a donor stepped forward to pay her tuition fees ongoing!  She soon completed primary school and this year started secondary school. Blessing will be joining university life in 2030 and aspires to train to be an Orthopedic Physician.

(Blessing has a full sponsor through University graduation, but not yet through medical school.)

Blessing’s current tuition due is $1,000.

Our Boys

Tuitions due by the end of April, $2,300

Sam

Sam is 21 yrs old. He has recently completed high school and will be joining university life this coming summer. Sam’s father died when he was about 8 years old. Sadly, his mother remarried a man who was very abusive to Sam. At the age of 10 years old, his stepfather chased him away, and he started taking care of himself. Striving to survive on his own, Sam did all kinds of odd jobs – like fetching water, digging trenches, washing clothes for whoever needed his services – all just to put food on the table and while living in a little grass thatched mud hut that a kind neighbor had offered him refuge in. The primary school Sam attended allowed him to pay whatever he could afford, permitting him simply to pay when he could. Often, he couldn’t put any food on his table and at times even failed to get clean water for bathing. He somehow managed to complete primary school but found it impossible to imagine how he could go further with his education. Then someone told him about our Global Village Children’s Project and he sought us out.  He was 15 years old when he joined our GVCP family. Anne invited Sam to came live with her and we started fully taking full care of him, including paying his tuition fees. Six years later he has now completed his final year of high school.  At this link, you can scroll down to see photos of Sam –  and Brian –  under our care in their earlier teen years, serving as volunteers at the “Home of Hope” – a facility located In Wakitaka, a village near Wanyange, that cares for severely disabled children. Sam is all set to join university life later this summer and looks forward to the day when he will be certified as a pharmacist.

Sam’s upcoming June tuition due will be $2,000.

Meddie

Meddie is 21 years old. He recently completed high school and will begin attending university later this summer. Meddie’s father died when he was two years old. Because his mother was illiterate, she could only do odd jobs to be able to send him to school. When Meddie got older, he would accompany his mother to help her in doing these jobs, as together they worked to raise his tuition. When he was in his second year of secondary school, Meddie and his mother came to us asking for help, because his mother had become very sick and could no longer work at all. We were delighted that we had the resources to welcome Meddie into our GVCP family at that critical moment in his young life. Meddie’s vision for his professional future is to become a physician.

Meddie’s upcoming June tuition due will be $2,000.

Eli
